“Song for the Land” // Summit 1.1, Cover Shoot

This was the most elaborate cover shoot I’ve been a part of. Three photographers, two different locations, starting at the break of dawn, serval boats involved. We didn’t end up using one of my photos for the cover, but I had a ton of fun shooting this, and some of my offerings aren’t half bad.

The issue, our sophomore effort, included a profile on Taimane, as well as a separate, lengthy feature on several sites in Kahaluʻu in which indigenous knowledge is being used to reclaim land and feed the people. It also included a profile on several local fashion designers, including Kini Zamora (Project Runway, Season 13).

For this issue, we wanted the cover to be more significant and really tie-in to the content of the issue in a number of ways. So we decided to do a photoshoot with Taimane, wearing a Kini Zamora dress, at two of the locations mentioned in the feature. We titled the issue “Song for the Land.”

Photographed: April 2015

Locations: Heʻeia State Park & Fishpond; Kākoʻo ʻŌiwi, Māhuahua ʻAi o Hoi, Kahaluʻu, Oʻahu
